My Overall Impression Of The Book Floating City Is That

My overall impression of the book Floating City is that it gives a good in-depth analysis of the organized crime economy in New York City. I enjoyed the book because it was credible, and very informative. The author, Sudhir Venkatesh is a great sociologist who is not afraid to go into the field and put himself in potentially dangerous situations for his research. Although it took him a long time to collect his data, Vankatesh persevered and wrote a great book. The topics covered in this book mirror those brought up in lecture very well. Crime, gentrification, urbanization, race and class all play big roles within the underground economy of New York City. Vankatesh’s studies incorporate many of the key themes within sociology and he ties†¦show more content†¦Contrary to those beliefs, not all criminals are deviant (Davidson, 2017). Those whom forge illegal immigrating documents to be able to create better lives for people living in third world countries may be breakin g the law, however they are doing what many would consider the right moral decision. Also, crimes such as sex trafficking and drug selling are also illegal, however there is such a need for these addictions in society, that more and more people are choosing these illegal careers, regardless of the social stigma they hold (Williams, 2010). Throughout the book, one of the drug dealers Vankatesh spends a lot of time with, Shine, often says that the reason he sells drugs is because of consumer supply and demand (Vankatesh, 2013). He sells drugs because he knows that regardless if he sells them or not, the drug addicts will get their product one way or another, so he might as well be the one making money off it. Although some may not agree, many drug traffickers and sex workers live by the consumer and demand concept to make up for the lack of ethics within their line of business. The world of organized crime consists of many different types of people performing many different types of i llegal duties. Although society views these acts as deviant, most of the criminals would not identify like so.
